Become a VCHS Volunteer
Venango County Historical Society has a variety of opportunities for volunteering.
As a non-profit organization, we depend on our volunteers!
Research Volunteer ~
Our Research Volunteers work in our Genealogical Research Library. You will be here to assist researchers who come to our facility to do family, genealogical or historical research. To get started, you will need to spend a day with one of our Research Volunteers learning the ropes and getting acquainted with all of our research materials. You will then be responisble for assisting researchers - finding the appropriate research tools, reshelving those materials at the end of the day, notifying the Archivist when archival documents are needed and filing library materials as necessary. There is always one or more research requests that have come in via email or mail to work on when there are no visitors. We ask that you sign up to work at least one day a month - on Wednesdays or Thursdays during our summer hours, and on Saturdays during April. If you enjoy doing research or genealogy, and helping others, this is the job for you!
House Volunteer ~
As a House Volunteer, you will be the first person a visitor will meet when they arrive. You will be responsible for answering the doors and greeting visitors, and making sure the Executive Secretary or Executive Director are notified whenever a non-visitor, such as someone with an appointment or who is making deliveries or repairs, has arrived. You will also offer visitors a tour of the house, explaining the different displays - as well as the way of life of the family who once occupied the house - as you go. This job also requires spending a day with a volunteer, and our Volunteer Guide will help you learn more about our house and our collections. We are open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays during our summer hours, and only on Saturdays during April - again, we ask for your help one or two days a month. This is a great job for those who enjoy meeting and talking with new people!
Clerical Volunteer ~
As a Clerical Volunteer, you will be working behind the scenes. You will be helping to assemble mailings, such as our quarterly newsletter, The Intelligencer; using a comb binder to get books ready for sale; and other jobs as needed by the Executive Secretary or Executive Director.
